At the beginning, the tour takes you along the foothills of the High Fens. Regardless of the season, the upland moor fascinates with its diverse plant species. It is colorful in spring and summer, while in winter the gnarled birch trees with their bizarre silhouettes create an eerily beautiful atmosphere. The Rur and Kleine Rur rivers wind their way through this unique upland moor, whose valleys carved into the landscape have to be crossed after a few kilometers. The route also crosses the Vennbahn railroad here, which leaves a lonely and deserted trail from the national border through low-lying, barren fenlands and will later take you back to the starting point. First, however, the route continues in the direction of Elsenborn. On your right, you have endless views over the headwaters of the Rur, while on your left are the shooting and training ranges of the Elsenborn military area. After leaving the wooded area of the Nidrumer Heck behind you, you will reach the Bütgenbach reservoir, one of the most important water sports centers in Belgium and one of the main tourist attractions in East Belgium, after a few kilometers.

From here, the route continues in the direction of Weywertz. Agricultural land and pastureland characterize this section of the tour. Shortly after junction 90, you come across the former Vennbahn railroad line again. Where trains carrying coal and steel once ran, cyclists can now explore the unique low mountain range landscape of the Eifel/Ardennes in comfort and with few inclines. There is not much left to remind you of the former operation of the Vennbahn between Aachen and the north of the Grand Duchy. A few abandoned stations, such as the well-preserved station building near Sourbrodt, parked wagons and frozen signaling systems bear witness to this turbulent time. The route winds its way through the landscape in elegant curves above the Rur and finally takes you back to the starting point in Kalterherberg.
