"Wiesenwege" Raeren

Raeren

At the beginning, the trail leads along the Iter, a watercourse that transforms the valley basin into a fertile area. But the path soon becomes treacherous, crossing fields and fences. Numerous hedgerows are scattered across the grassland: a stroke of luck for the preservation of biodiversity and the beauty of the landscape. If you walk along these hawthorn and rose hedges in spring, you will undoubtedly discover the numerous fruits sparkling in the sun. They are not used to decorate the paths; the greenfinches and bullfinches find their food here.

These natural corridors lead us to the forest near the old railroad line. The old tanks, switch cables and abandoned locomotives bear witness to the hustle and bustle that must once have prevailed at this border station: Nowadays, however, everything is quiet and deserted. In Raeren, the residential areas are fragmented. The village, which incidentally is one of the largest in Belgium, is lost in the vastness. We quickly notice this when the route crosses villages here and there that are connected by paths through flowering fields.
