Westwall-Eifelkreuz
The circular tour starts at the church of St. Johann Baptist in Simmerath, whose origins date back to the 14th century. The church is modeled on a Roman basilica and is still quite young in parts.
After leaving the village, you walk through a natural landscape and reach the remains of the former Westwall after just a few kilometers. Today, the humps of the ramparts are a protected monument and serve as a refuge for many rare plant and animal species. As part of the hike, you will even walk over the former remains of the defensive walls, which have now been converted into paths.
The tour continues towards Paustenbach, where you will pass a wayside cross on the Paustenbacher Höhe (Kopp), which also commemorates the dramatic battles of the Second World War. Here you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view.
You then follow the path west along the tranquil Kall river before leaving the course of the river to turn south and return to the starting point.
