Rennradtour: Gipfelstürmer: Die höchsten Berge der Euregio!
Vaals
From summit to summit on the Vennbahn! This varied day tour takes you from the highest point in the Netherlands at the border triangle in Aachen to the highest point in Belgium at Signal Botrange in the High Fens. Gentle climbs on the Vennbahn, which climbs only up to 3%, alternate with long ascents and fast, varied descents on the way back to the last summit of the day, the Dreiländerpunkt on the Vaalser Berg.
The starting point of this tour is the Dreiländerpunkt on the Vaalserberg, from where our tour leads down to the Belgian side to Gemmenich and past the Göhltal viaduct in Moresnet via Hauset in the direction of Willer, where it follows the B258 for a short distance before turning onto the route of the Vennbahn cycle path in Schmitthof.
The gentle gradient of the railroad cycle path of a maximum of 3% now takes you through dense green Eifel forests past Roetgen, Lamersdorf, Monschau and Kalterherberg into the High Fens. At kilometer 54, it is certainly worth making a detour to the beautiful old town of Monschau, which is also an ideal resting place after almost 2 hours of cycling. The tour continues along the Vennbahn until kilometer 70 and does not present any major challenges until the route leaves the Vennbahn route and climbs steadily uphill via Robertville to the highest point in Belgium, the Signal Botrange at 694m.
The ascent up to Signal Botrange is steady and without any major gradients, but requires a good basic level of fitness due to its length. The so-called "Baltia Hill" was built at the time to raise Belgium's highest point to over 700m. About one kilometer south of the Botrange is the Botrange Nature Park Centre with changing exhibitions on regional and nature themes as well as a permanent exhibition.
Once at the top, the route immediately descends to the descent, which you leave to the right at km 100 to the "Lac de la Gileppe" reservoir, whose spectacular dam wall makes a nice photo stop. The route continues through part of the Vesdre into the lush green landscape of the Herver Land, where the route is hilly to undulating via Welkenraedt, Henri-Chapelle and Hombourg into Mergelland. Passing the "Mergelhof" golf course, the route now climbs steadily back to Gemmenich, where the final ascent to the Dreiländerpunkt is tackled on the Vaalserberg.
