Blausteintour
Eschweiler
The landscape on the trail around the Blaustein lake is diverse. The lake, which was created from a residual open-cast mining hole, owes its name to a parcel of land north of Eschweiler, the "Am blauen Stein" parcel. During the reprocessing and recultivation of the former open-cast mining area, a total of around 75 million cubic meters of water were needed to fill the lake, which reached its current size in 2005 at a maximum depth of around 43.5 meters. The Blaustein Lake recreation area was officially opened in 2000.
For some visitors who experienced this period of careful creation with the still artificially planted greenery, it seems almost unreal how the now dense green belt with its diverse flora and fauna surrounds the lake.
Along the way, sunny country lanes alternate with almost enchanted-looking forest paths. Impressive images of the recultivated open-cast mining landscape, orchards and nature reserves are the highlights of this route. We also pass the Langendorf memorial, which commemorates the former village that was one of many villages that had to give way due to its location in the mining area.
