Venn- und Rurlandschaft bei Monschau

Simmerath

This cycle tour takes you through the moor. You cycle on safe cycle paths through the High Fens and experience the unique moorland landscape up close. In terms of scenery, you can look forward to dense forests and an unspoilt moor and heathland landscape. A bit of culture awaits you on the last five kilometers of your route: discover the former smugglers' village of Mützenich, the historic old town of Monschau, the viaduct and Reichenstein Monastery as well as the Eifel Cathedral.

Interesting facts about the High Fens:

Plants: At any time of year, you can marvel at a different variety of plants in the moor and heathland landscape. In spring, you can see delicate white-pink spots of cranberry and rosemary heather. In early summer, white cotton grass flakes bloom and in late summer and fall, the purple heather shines in the moor. After the first frost you can marvel at the rust-orange moor grass and in winter the typical gnarled bog birch trees.

Animals: The moor is home to some rare animals such as black grouse, wildcats, badgers, foxes and many bird species.

Waysidecrosses: In the past, some hikers lost their lives on the moor. The wayside crosses commemorate these tragic stories. The well-known "Cross of the Betrothed", for example, stands for a couple who died in a snowstorm.

You can find out even more about the High Fens at the Ternell Nature Center, which is on your way.
