Grünroute: Etappe 4 Voerendaal - Maasmechelen / Eisden
Just a few decades ago, mining shaped the border triangle of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The Green Route combines the industrial monuments with the region's new closeness to nature. Anyone cycling in the "green metropolis" will experience this landscape in a completely new way. The area, which stretches from Düren to Beringen in Belgium, was once one of the largest coal mining areas in Europe. The relics of mining are still visible in many places. Miners' settlements, old castles and museums pass by, and time and again you come across former collieries that are now relaxing parkland.
