Pottery Route – on the Vennbahn to the pottery-makers at Raeren
The beginning of this route follows the old course of the Vennbahn. Where once freight trains loaded with pig iron rolled, today you can cycle an easy, mostly flat route all the way to Raeren. (Further information: www.vennbahn.eu)
A perfect spot to take a first break is in the historic town centre of Kornelimünster, for a brief stroll through the quaint and charming lanes. Kornelimünster survived the two great wars of the 20th century largely unscathed, and its townscape is still dominated by 17th and 18th century mansions. The medieval town centre has been almost completely preserved.
From here, we continue towards Belgium to the village of Raeren, known for its pottery since the 13th century, when its wares were in demand all over Europe. With its quarry stone houses defining the townscape, it’s easy to imagine that this is exactly how the village looked back then. The absolute highlight in Raeren, and one of the highlights of the tour, is Raeren’s historic 14th-century moated castle. Inside, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the potters of Raeren and admire the level of mastery of their products. The castle museum has an excellently curated permanent exhibition presenting a comprehensive overview of the unique local ceramics, which were named officially as European cultural heritage in 2007 (for further information, see: www.toepfereimuseum.org).
Continuing to Hauset and Hergenrath, the route turns back through the Aachen Woods towards the city and Aachen main train station, which is both the start and end point of the tour. And if you still have any energy after the tour, a short detour to the historic old town of Aachen to see the cathedral and town hall is highly recommended. Simply follow the signs to Aachen main station, and then take a stroll through the old alleyways and rich history of Aachen.
