Kalterherberg (Tour 2)
Enjoy the hilly Eifel landscape around Kalterherberg on this approx. 26-kilometre route. You start at the Ruitzhof and ride past the Kalterherberg elementary school towards the Perlenbach and Fuhrtsbachtal nature reserve to the German-Belgian border. The nature reserve covers approx. 330 hectares and is one of the rare intermediate moors characterized by a constantly high and only slightly fluctuating water level. An impressive natural spectacle awaits riders in spring between April and May. Millions of blooming daffodils transform the gently sloping hillsides and the valley floor into a bright yellow carpet of flowers. The trail continues in a wide arc to the Fuhrtsbach stream and from here south along the stream. After crossing the stream over a bridge, you reach the Perlenbacher Mühle mill, where you can take a short break. The route then continues along the north bank of the Perlenbach dam to Perlenau and from here along the south bank of the Perlenbach to the Rur near Dreistegen. On the next section, you ride along the RurUfer cycle path through the idyllic Kerbtal valley of the Rur, past the cloth-making town of Monschau to the former Premonstratensian monastery of Reichenstein, whose history dates back to the 12th century. The Norbertus Chapel, built at the beginning of the 20th century and nestling on the slope near the Rur bridge, is also worth a second look. After a few kilometers, you cross over to the other side of the Rur at a ford. After crossing the Vennbahn, the tour makes a small loop in a northerly direction before returning to the starting point at the Ruitzhof.
