Monschau

Hiking in the footsteps of Charlemagne

Go back in time and hike in the footsteps of the Carolingian kingdom: The varied Emperor Charlemagne Trail in the Monschau region takes you back into the history of the 7th-10th centuries. The circular hiking trail has been in existence since 2014 and was created to mark the 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne's death. The people of the Eifel region are still closely associated with the ruler today, as the region gained enormous importance through his empire. On the extensive themed hiking trail, you can learn all about the special features of Charlemagne's former hunting grounds at 17 stations and locations. Numerous interesting information and activity boards relating to the Carolingian period turn the hike into a historical and cultural excursion for the whole family.

The hiking trail has a total length of 8.7 km. You will be walking on paved paths and trails and only slight inclines await you. If necessary, you can also shorten the hike to 4, 5 or 7.5 km.

A highlight of the family hiking trail is definitely the historical destination of the "Kaiser-Karls-Bettstatt". According to legend, Charlemagne spent the night on the large stones when he was unable to find his way back to the courtyard on a hunting trip. This historical picnic spot can also be reached by baby carriage from the Vennort Mützenich. The outward and return journey is around 4 km.

From the path, you can also see the grounds of the Hardthof, the former royal farm, where the predecessor of the Pankratius Chapel is believed to have stood. The chapel is considered to be the oldest post-Roman monument in the Rhineland. It is located directly on the path behind the parish church.

A well-deserved reward after the hike

Absorbing knowledge and exercise makes you hungry! Just a 10-minute walk from the "Kaiser-Karls-Bettstatt", the "Venngasthof Zur Buche" offers Mediterranean and regional cuisine with fresh ingredients.

Von Erkensruhr durch das Püngel- und Wüstebachtal

This tour takes you through the Püngel and Wüstebach valleys in the Eifel National Park. You hike from Erkensruhr through beech and mixed deciduous forests rich in deadwood, accompanied most of the time by the sound of one of the low mountain streams. The area is rich in flora and fauna. In spring, the daffodil blossom can be experienced, in summer the meadows become colorful thanks to the blooms of numerous wildflower species. At the beginning of 2017, a nature conservation project will come to an end here, which aims to pave the way for nature in the development national park to become wilderness. Some of the measures are visible and explained on the hike. The route consists of paved paths and small trails. The inclines and declines are not extreme, but a little surefootedness is required in a few places. All paths are marked on the hiking map. First you follow the Rur-Olef route upstream above Erkensruhr, then you follow the T3 themed tour, which you only leave for a short section that leads along the Püngelbach stream as a narrow path.
