Im Schatten von CAP und Emil Mayrisch
Baesweiler
The starting point of this 30km tour is the 7-hectare Carl Alexander Park in Baesweiler, which was created as part of the Euregionale 2008. The imposing slag heap ascent and a fantastic viewing platform invite you to walk up the slag heap and marvel at the course of the cycle tour from above. Far-reaching views of all the surrounding spoil tips guaranteed!
The route then heads towards the center of Baesweiler past Reyplatz until you leave Baesweiler in the direction of Setterich and Puffendorf, always in the shadow of the former "Emil Mayrisch" coal mine, which was one of the most modern mines in Europe at the time. Quiet and far away from traffic, the route follows country lanes towards Geilenkirchen, where it meets the River Wurm. The route along the Wurm is quiet and tranquil amidst beautiful natural and river landscapes until you reach Trips Castle, a moated castle dating back to the 15th century. Here we are just a stone's throw away from Geilenkirchen, which we pass through the town center, only to follow the course of the Wurm again shortly afterwards towards Übach-Palenberg, where Rimburg Castle is the next historic moated castle waiting for us and where we leave the Wurm valley. Here the route takes us uphill towards the town center before returning to Baesweiler, where our start and finish point is located at the foot of the slag heap. The "Bergfoyer" is the perfect place to reflect on what you have experienced.
