Hohes Venn-Route - Through the landscape of the Hohes Venn

The tour leads through the middle of the "Hohes Venn" high moor area, which is unique in Europe. The wild and romantic moorland landscape delights in all seasons with its splendour of plants: in spring tender white-pink spots of cranberry and rosemary heather, in early summer white cotton grass flakes, in late summer and autumn the purple heather, after the first frost the rusty orange moor grass and in winter the bizarre silhouettes of the gnarled moor birches that give the Venn a scary and beautiful aura. In addition, there are eerie stories of lost hikers who lost their lives in the Hohes Venn and who still remind us of numerous crossroads today. Most of them don't end up happy. Murdered, drowned, frozen, mysteriously dead. Probably the best-known cross of misfortune is "The Cross of the Fiancée". A couple that died here in a blizzard.

But there is also a lot to discover outside the high moor area, e.g. the idyllic Osthertogenforest, which nature conservationists are slowly but steadily defoliating and returning to a mixed forest. At the  Weser valley dam, a restaurant with a panoramic terrace and playground invites families with children in particular to stay. The almost fairytale-like and densely overgrown valley of the Weser is also absolutely worth seeing.

If you want to know more about the life of the people in the past days, a visit to the farmers museum in Lammersorf, located directly on the Vennbahn, is recommended. An old half-timbered house was furnished just as the ancestors did at the turn of the century.
