Until 2012, the Green Route ended in the Plaas recreation area near Beringen, but now the last signposted stage of the day takes you 40 km to the provincial capital of Hasselt. This not only offers a worthy final highlight, but also better departure options. On the way to Hasselt, you cycle around the green town of Paal in a wide arc and reach the Albert Canal, where you can quickly collect kilometers on your way to Hasselt. Before you reach Hasselt city center, however, the route turns southwest to Herkenrode Abbey. Real Trappist beer is still brewed here and all the paths around the abbey through the fields and small woods are easy to cycle on. On the last section into the town, you cycle past the harbour and through the historic center. Enjoy your stay in Hasselt!
