Grenzenlos durch das Eurode-Land
Herzogenrath
Eurode is the name for the symbolic European city consisting of the German town of Herzogenrath and the Dutch municipality of Kerkrade and is based on the medieval name of the region "Land of Rode". The starting point of the 37km long tour at junction 18 was deliberately chosen at the landmark and former center of Rode country. Rode Castle in the center of Herzogenrath is still the heart of the town today and is regularly used as a venue for numerous cultural events.
Starting from Rode Castle, we follow the route through the picturesque Wurmtal valley towards the village of Horbach, from where we cross the border with our Dutch neighbors for the first time. Here, the route passes numerous interesting sights and excursion destinations, such as the former Roda Stadium, the GAIA Zoo, the historic Erenstein Castle and the Cranenweyer.
Back to Germany, the tour again follows the natural course of the Wurm, which acts as a border river here and exudes a very special charm with its natural beauty. Shortly before you reach Übach-Palenberg, your fitness is put to the test as you leave the Wurm valley up towards Herbach and then cycle back south. In Alsdorf-Zopp, you finally turn off into the idyllic Broichbach valley, which takes you along picturesque paths along the course of the stream and the many lakes and ponds back to the starting point in Herzogenrath, where the beautiful town center invites you to linger and recharge your batteries.
