Feierabendrunde Herzogenrath, Klinkheide

Herzfeld

Off we go on a worm adventure on enchanted paths, which can sometimes be muddy and bumpy, sporty uphill and downhill or very leisurely parallel to the slope and along the floodplain. On the way, we ponder on a bench with a beautiful view of the valley, hear the Wurm rippling and see it flashing between the leaves and branches through the hillside forests. Then we get up close to it, approach idyllic banks and, with a bit of luck, encounter a kingfisher at home in the loamy-sandy banks or simply watch the Wurm flow from a busy footbridge.

History lies dormant in all this greenery: We pass the colliery building of the Furth mine, which now serves as a residential building. The coal mine in the Wurmtal valley, which is mentioned as early as 1690, was active until 1883/84. The small plaque of Jesus in the lintel is a relic of the former prayer room in the building, which workers used to visit before going underground in the hydroelectric paternoster.

The West Wall lies in the forest, completely conquered by greenery. The 630-kilometre-long hump-shaped line between Kleve and Weil am Rhein, which the Nazi dictatorship had planned as a deterrent bulwark in 1938/39, was unable to withstand the liberation by the Allies. Its relics now rest peacefully in the forest and provide ecological niches.
