Durch den Buhlert zum Rursee
This idyllic tour has a lot to offer in terms of scenery. At the beginning of the tour, you pass through the so-called Buhlert, a densely overgrown forest area characterized mainly by spruce trees. During the Second World War, the forest area was part of the heavily contested Northern Eifel and the region around the Hürtgen Forest, where the German armed forces fought defensive battles against the attacking US Army. Even today, trenches, bomb craters and finds in the ground bear witness to the heavy fighting and many trees still contain bullets and shell splinters that prevent the timber industry from processing the trees, for example. The so-called Westwall with its bunkers also ran through the Buhlert. Some of the bunkers are still well preserved and safe to walk through.
After leaving the Buhlert, the landscape changes behind the charming Eifel village of Schmidt, situated on the northern edge of the Rur dam. From here, the tour leads along the banks of the Rursee, offering breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding Eifel landscape. Natural scenery full of tranquillity and elegance impresses at every turn along the lakes. Dense deciduous forest lines the banks along much of the route. In addition to power stations and dams, the cycle tour takes in a unique refuge for rare animal and plant species, as the route crosses the fringes of the Eifel National Park, the only national park in North Rhine-Westphalia. This is home to beavers, a symbol of nature conservation, as well as eagle owls and wildcats, honey buzzards and red kites, bearded owls and daffodil meadows, deer tongues and beech ferns.
The two Rursee villages of Woffelsbach and Rurberg, through which the route runs, offer a wide range of activities for every visitor. Woffelsbach is particularly inviting for sporting activities on the Rursee. Sailing and boating are in the foreground. In Rurberg, numerous cafés and restaurants offer a wide range of options and invite you to linger. The tour ends in the Eifel village of Einruhr, also idyllically situated on the Rursee. From here, you can take the bus or, at weekends, the cycle bus back to the starting point or to Aachen.
