Dreiborner Hochfläche

In the center of the Eifel National Park, the vast open land and forest areas of the Dreiborn plateau have also been accessible on foot and by bike since the beginning of 2006. The attraction of the Dreiborn plateau lies in its diversity: wide meadows alternate with broom heaths and pioneer forest, woodland and floodplain forest formations. In spring, the yellow flowers of the broom, the so-called "Eifel gold", shine brightly here.

As a result of military use since 1946, the plateau has seen the beginning of an extraordinarily exciting landscape development. Areas that had been intensively used by humans for centuries were now left to their own devices or were only extensively farmed, allowing a unique landscape to develop. Apart from the military exercises, there has hardly been any other disturbance on the site for decades, meaning that observations of wildlife are not uncommon.

Highlights along the route:

  • Eifel National Park
  • Dreiborn plateau
  • Upper lake with Rursee boat trip
  • Gorse blossom in spring, also known as Eifel gold
