Dorfrundgang Rollesbroich

We start our circular route in the parking lot in front of the cemetery, but first take a look at the beautiful wildflower meadow diagonally opposite the kindergarten on Friedhofsweg. We turn into Otto-Voss-Straße, which preserves the memory of the priest who worked in Rollesbroich after the end of the Second World War and whose work still shapes life in the village today.

Passing well-kept properties, we reach Steinrötschstraße, which we follow to the left. Where Äuchesgasse joins, there used to be a village pond, which was a popular place for children to play. However, this was the fate of little Margreta Hermanns. She died here in 1696. An old stone cross with an unusual depiction of a skull still keeps her memory alive today.

In Äuchesgasse, we immerse ourselves in a romantic village world. The narrow road meanders gently along, lined with mighty beech trees, gnarled hedges and old half-timbered houses. To the left, we have a wonderful view across the meadows to the neighboring village of Strauch. We now reach Streinrötschstraße again. Where it turns right, we come across an ivy-covered wayside cross in the outer wall of a farmhouse. Shortly afterwards, we come across a half-timbered house with a beautiful flower garden. It is the oldest building in Rollesbroich. An inscription in the gable commemorates its construction in 1658.

After crossing Dürener Straße, we come across the birthplace of the missionary Helena Stollenwerk on the right-hand side, who was born here on November 28, 1852 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 7, 1995.

Another example of the high recreational value of Rollesbroich and its surroundings can be found in Rolandstraße. Just behind the sports field, we have a wonderful view of the extensive wooded areas between the Kalltal valley and the Langschoß hill near Lammersdorf. We now walk back a few steps and then turn into Konertzweg. We soon reach the well-kept village square. It is not always as quiet and tranquil as on our hike. Especially on May 1st and at funfairs, things get lively. After all, it is not for nothing that the village is known far and wide for its distinctive village and club life. Before we continue, we take a look at the board in front of the playground, which informs us about the "Eifel hiking experience" in and around the national park.

It's not far to the parish church, which was built between 1952 and 1954 on the ruins of the previous building destroyed in the war. As soon as we enter the church, we are amazed at the unusual shape of the interior. It is the work of Pastor Otto Voss, whom we met at the beginning of our tour. Due to his unusually modern ideas for the time, he had to do a lot of convincing, but in the end he was able to push through his plans. The first thing we notice when we enter the choir is the unusual cross, which, like the ambo and tabernacle, comes from the studio of the Vossenack Franciscan priest Laurentius U. Englisch. Jesus, still bound with the shackles of death in the tomb of the cross, looks down at us with open eyes and outstretched eyes. Here we encounter not the dead Lord, but the risen Lord in the symbol of the vine.

To the right of the choir, a staircase leads down. After pressing the light switch, we descend into the crypt. We enter an almost mystical room. In a niche behind the altar, there is a vessel containing a relic of Blessed Sister Helena Stollenwerk. The niche in the opposite wall houses an old Pieta.

Passing the half-timbered building of the former school, we come to a chapel. There used to be a pond here too. The oldest inhabitants of Rollesbroich still remember well how they used to skate here as schoolchildren in winter. We now turn into the lower part of Otto-Voss-Straße and shortly afterwards reach the starting point of our tour.
