Dorfrundgang Eicherscheid

We start at the intersection of the through road (Eicherscheid) with Bachstraße and Am Weiher. We leave the memorial on the left and walk slightly uphill past the kindergarten and reach the Am Krözjeswaß triangle with the chapel, above which a lime tree spreads its branches. It is the first of Eicherscheid's four "holy houses", all of which we will encounter on our tour.

We now follow the Kirchweg, see the parish hall on the left, which was built in 1984 with considerable effort by the village population, and see the 400-year-old lime tree in front of us. Before we turn left into the street Auf Dohnschet, we pass one of the numerous protective hedges up to 8 meters high. They were built to protect the houses from the cool westerly winds.

Passing the second "Heiligenhäuschen", we cross Fronrater Weg and see a beautiful hedge of holly on the right, then turn sharp left after about 50 meters. A few meters after the old half-timbered house on the right, we turn right and continue along the unpaved farm track. Here, the landscape opens up and provides a view of the rapidly sloping Holzbach valley and the village of Imgenbroich on the other side of the Belgenbach valley, where we can always catch new glimpses of the landscape on the edge of the High Fens between the old hedges.

Once we reach the turning area, we follow the road Zum Belgenbach slightly uphill. Here, at the south-western end of the village, after just a few meters we come across a Winkelhof farm, which is tightly enclosed by magnificent hedges and is probably one of the most beautiful in the entire region. On the way on, we pass two holly trees, which, like the mighty oak tree just a few meters behind them, are among the village's natural monuments.

At the next junction at the latest (we turn right), we realize that without the route map, we would have slight problems finding our way. Eicherscheid is a distinctly clustered village. Many a person has needed the help of the locals to find their way through the maze of alleyways and streets. Past the 3rd chapel, the path leads us up to the so-called "Hövel" with the field name "Op Hoeppenheck" in the immediate vicinity of another mighty hedge. There is a seating area here in the small playground and we gladly accept the invitation to take a break for the rest of the way. Here we meet the "Flurheckenweg" and see an information board about the production of hames and wooden saddles. On the tree next to us hangs one of those wooden signs that we have already come across in several places. They provide information about the old field names and thus preserve the historical heritage from being forgotten. We now follow Breitestraße, initially slightly downhill, where 100 m after the left-hand bend on the right-hand side we find the privately run Farmers' Museum (Tel. 02473 8252), whose "treasures" we should take a look at. Passing several old half-timbered houses worth seeing and the 4th chapel, we reach the road Eicherscheid, here we turn right.

After approx. 300m we turn into the street In den Gassen and come to Buschgasse. If you wish, you can return to the starting point on Bachstraße by turning left along the level road and crossing the village square. However, we are now immersed in the unique hedgerow landscape for which Eicherscheid is known far beyond the region. On our way through the Borr-Jaaß, we have a wonderful view of this unique cultural landscape. At Asterbruch, we turn left and reach Bachstraße with the two sports fields. Eicherscheid is one of the places in the municipality of Simmerath with the oldest traces of settlement. There is a reason why this is mentioned here. Remains of Roman buildings from the 3rd century AD were first discovered in the immediate vicinity of the sports field in 1958. The excavations also unearthed a number of pottery finds. On the right-hand side, between the grass pitch and the artificial turf pitch, we find a cattle trough, which is a reminder of the economic system of cattle farming that prevailed for centuries. Like the artificial pitch, the "Tenne" is an example of the great village community of Eicherscheid. The clubhouse was built from the planning stage to the finishing touches (approx. 20,000 working hours) and is now used by Eicherscheid residents and people from near and far for both private celebrations and public events. The magnificent artificial turf pitch was also only possible thanks to the considerable contribution of 6500 hours of work by the village population. After a few steps, we see the special school of the Nordeifel special school association on a hill to our right. Hardly anyone suspects that a secret is hidden behind the gray gate in front of us. The school is located on an extensive bunker system built during the Cold War. Far away from the urban centers, the Cologne district government was supposed to find shelter here in an emergency. Fortunately, there were only a few exercises. At the next fork in the road on the right-hand side is the village community center, built in 1953. In the basement, where youth groups have their recreation room today, was the communal laundry room. In the post-war period, when not everyone could afford a washing machine, this place was also a popular meeting place. After all, it wasn't just about clean laundry, but also about news from the village. Opposite is a lavishly restored half-timbered house that was once covered in reeds. Shortly before our starting point, we have the opportunity to stop for refreshments (ask for opening times: Tel. 02473 1310) to fortify ourselves after the varied hike. The village store is located directly at the starting point. In addition to "coffee to go", it offers baked goods, groceries and regional products.
