Der Weiße Weg
The "White Path" leads from Aachen's Lousberg to the Nullander Berg in Kerkrade. The route first runs past the Lousberg terrace, from where you can enjoy an almost endless panoramic view over the Soers, the north of Aachen as far as Herzogenrath and the Netherlands. This distant view is the ideal start to the hike and a unique experience.
The route continues through the Soers, where the equestrian stadium and the new Tivoli are a splendid sight. This rural district in the north of Aachen is of crucial importance for Aachen's urban climate. The Soers acts as a cold air reservoir and thus supplies the city of Aachen with fresh air. Walkers are greeted by the flora and fauna typical of a wetland. In addition to the botanical and faunistic experience, the Soers is a "cluster" of historical and cultural highlights. One example is the old cloth mill, a witness to the textile industry, which was one of the most important early industrial sectors in the region.
Through the Paulinenwäldchen, past Obeliskenplatz, the route heads towards the Dutch border. Before crossing the border, the route follows in the footsteps of coal mining. On the Haldenweg in the south of Herzogenrath, you can apparently still hear the noise of the old conveyor systems.
After a short walk through agricultural landscapes in the south-west of Herzogenrath, the route stops at the Amstelbachterasse. From here you can enjoy a first-class view over the picturesque Amstelbach valley.
The border crossing over the Amstelbach bridge is certainly a highlight. The bridge not only impresses structurally, but is also an architectural ambassador of cross-border solidarity in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. The route ends at the Nullander Berg, where the route ends.
