Agrippastraße Etappe 1: Köln bis Erftstadt
Köln
The start of stage 1 on Agrippastrasse is the once probably elaborately designed Roman city gate with two passages on the corner of Clemensstrasse and Bobstrasse. Instead of the gate, the area is now covered by parking pockets. However, remains of the Roman city wall can still be seen on Mauritiussteinweg. Continue along Luxemburgerstraße in the direction of Klettenberg. At some distance from the Roman town, cemeteries stretched for several kilometers on both sides of the road. A Roman milestone was found near Greinstraße, a cast of which is on display in the foyer of the district court.
Continuing along Luxemburgerstraße out of town, you will see the moated castle "Weißhaus" on the left in the middle of a well-kept park (it is privately owned and unfortunately not accessible). Another unusual "time window" on the former Agrippastrasse and today's Luxemburgerstrasse is the Klettenbergpark, which was created between 1905 and 1907 as part of the city's expansion.
From the Hürtherberg recreation area (Industriestraße), the route passes relics of Roman times, such as the Verteilerkreis with the unmistakable theme of "Roman roads", a Roman burial chamber discovered as early as 1899 (corner of Kaulardstraße/Luxemburgerstraße).
To get from Industriestraße to Erftstadt-Liblar, first follow Luxemburgerstraße, which is now a dual carriageway but only has a moderately wide cycle and pedestrian path. Then turn right onto a shady forest path to the Bleibtreusee parking lot, which is one of the many lakes that have become a bathing paradise after lignite mining and recultivation of the land.
Once you reach Carlo-Schurz-Straße, you will once again have the old Roman road under your feet. The impressive moated castle "Gracht" is worth seeing at this point.
The Mansio Liblar serves as an extensive information center about the Roman road experience, but also as the destination of the first stage.
