WasserWeg Blausteinsee
Eschweiler
This 5.2 km long themed circular trail "WasserWeg Blausteinsee" was developed in collaboration with the NaturFreunde Eschweiler as part of the WasserWege project of NaturFreunde NRW. It leads through a new landscape with many memories and focuses on the Blausteinsee with all its interesting stories.
Where villages and fields once had to make way for lignite mining, there is now the approximately 100-hectare, 46-metre-deep Blausteinsee lake, which offers swimming and leisure fun for young and old. The artificial lake was created as part of the recultivation of the Zukunft-West open-cast mine by filling a residual open-cast mine hole with surface water and is now in a constant state of tension between recreational use and nature conservation. The whole story awaits you in the form of interactive information boards along the circular trail. You will also learn about other exciting topics relating to the characteristics of the lake and regional structural change. Memorial stones and wayside crosses commemorate places that once existed but were displaced in the course of open-cast mining.
You can also look forward to a varied hike away from the thematic preparation of the water trail. Parts of the route lead directly along the lakeshore, giving you great views of the water at several points. At the same time, you are guided along narrow paths and through afforested areas and walk along field and forest paths through the nature reserve in the north-eastern area of the Blausteinsee.
Combine your circular tour with the great water activities (diving, sailing, surfing, bathing beach, etc.) at the Blausteinsee leisure center or simply relax after the tour in the sunshine on the terraces and promenades right by the water. The leisure facilities at the lake center have been further expanded with the construction of the lake stage (viewing platform).
