Vennbahn (Etappe 2) Monschau - St. Vith.
At the old railroad station in Monschau, the route passes Mützenich, a former smugglers' stronghold, and over the Reichenstein viaduct, which offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and provides a touch of adventure. In Kalterherberg, the stage leads back into Belgian territory and past the German exclave "Ruitzhof". The unique heath landscape announces the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park, which you pass on this section. This fascinating area of high moorland acts as a gigantic water reservoir, ensuring that there are numerous streams and rivers to cross. Passing the excellently preserved station building in Sourbrodt, the Vennbahn route makes its way between the two lakes of Robertville and Bütgenbach to Waimes (Weismes).
From Weismes, the route continues over a water-bound surface past lush green and gently undulating hills. An ideal place for horse paddocks, which you can enjoy for minutes as you pass the Wolfsbusch. In the direction of Montenau, the smell of freshly smoked Ardennes ham wafts towards you in a favorable wind, tempting you to take a long break. In Born, the route then leads under a viaduct for a change and on to the lively little town of St. Vith. After the tour, you can immerse yourself in the eventful past of the Vennbahn in the local museum of the stage town.
