Rund um das "Hohe Venn"
The tour leads through the heart of the "Hohes Venn" raised bog area, which is unique in Europe. The moorland landscape delights visitors all year round with its endless plant splendor: delicate white-pink dots of cranberry and rosemary heather in spring, white cotton grass flakes in early summer, purple heather in late summer and fall, rust-orange pipe grass after the first frost and the bizarre silhouettes of gnarled bog birch trees in winter, which give the fens an eerily beautiful aura. There are also eerie stories of lost hikers who lost their lives in the High Fens and who are still remembered today by numerous wayside crosses. And every cross has its own story. Most of them do not end happily. Murdered, drowned, frozen to death, mysteriously killed. Probably the most famous unfortunate cross is "The Cross of the Betrothed". A couple died here in a snowstorm.
But there is also plenty to discover outside the high moor area, such as the idyllic Osthertogenwald forest, which conservationists are slowly but steadily clearing and turning back into a mixed forest. At the Weserbachtalsperre, also known as the Eupener Talsperre, a restaurant with a viewing terrace and an unusually equipped playground invites families with children in particular to linger.
A fitting end to this fascinating tour is the almost fairytale-like and densely overgrown valley of the Weser, before returning to Roetgen.
