Uralte Wege - Stille Pfade
Monschau-Imgenbroich
Those who love enchanted paths through unspoilt nature, magnificent views and numerous sights from five centuries will get their money's worth on this hike. From the hiking parking lot, the trail first leads east through the residential area "Am Weiher". Passing the playground, school and kindergarten, you reach the Imgenbroich hedgerow area with its mighty beech trees. Before the Tränkhof farm, a romantic path to the right leads down into the Belgenbach valley. The hiker is surrounded by soothing silence. The valley floor, with its birch and alder trees and babbling brook, is a paradise for numerous animal and plant species and is perfect for breathing a sigh of relief. Just behind the former mill pond, an ancient path cuts through the mighty slate rock. Since the Middle Ages, countless wagons with iron-shod wheels have created one of the best-preserved historical paths in the Monschau region. The destination of their journey was the Belgenbach mill. It was built between 1550 and 1560 as an "adjoining mill" to the first mill in the Belgenbach valley, which was mentioned further up the valley in 1306 and of which unfortunately nothing remains. The first section of the ascending path offers a few more historical cart tracks. Via a forest path that winds along the slope, you reach the next attraction: the "Eifel-Blick" high above the Rur valley. It offers a magnificent view of Widdau to the left and further on via Rohren to Höfen.
After a short ascent, the path first leads past the edge of the forest. South of the K 21, a cross invites you to commemorate four Imgenbroich residents who were killed there during the fierce battles of World War II. other relics of that unfortunate time are the trenches that you pass as you ascend through the spruce forest. After crossing the Grünentalstraße, you reach the southern meadow landscape of Imgenbroich through the pretty residential area of Belgenbacher Weg. The small village of Menzerath will surprise you with another cultural highlight. Hidden behind a high quarry stone wall is an old cemetery with imposing gravestones. In addition to clergymen from the Protestant community, numerous members of the Imgenbroich and Monschau cloth-making families found their final resting place here between 1678 and 1862. After crossing the Eschbach stream and passing the Hargard youth hostel, you reach the typical hedgerow country of the region on the other side of the B 258. The 1.4-kilometre loop to the west of the village once again offers some special features at the end of the hike. In front of a plot of land framed by mighty trees, a stone cross commemorates the Walchenau cemetery, the first burial place of Lutherans and Reformed in the Monschau region between 1600 and 1794. At the westernmost point of the route, you will once again come across a relic of the Second World War: the "Höckerlinien" of the "Westwall", which was erected as an anti-tank barrier. However, the approximately 500-metre-long stretch over the edge of the foundations offers more than just a remnant from those unfortunate times. Valuable biotopes have now been created where destruction originally lurked.
But what impresses most is the magnificent panorama. To the south, the 660-metre-high Pannensterzkopf near Kalterherberg borders the horizon. To the west, Mützenich with its extensive pastureland and the green areas of the "Hatzevenn" clearing settlement, which was built between 1923 and 1929, are adjacent.
