Rursee-Altitude-Way

Simmerath

The 14.6 km long tour starts at the National Park Gate in Rurberg, where guests can find out about the scenic characteristics of the National Park region and the Rursee before the tour. In the exhibition "Lifelines of Nature" the flora and fauna of the only national park in North Rhine-Westphalia are thematized and explained in an appealing way. At the beginning the tour leads 100 meters along the shore of the Rursee, which belongs with a capacity of 205 million m³ to the largest dams of Germany, before the way to the west branches off into the mountain ranges of the Eifel. After leaving the village you will reach the Weidenbacher Mühle, built in 1807. The idyllically situated building was once driven by a water wheel and mainly ground rye and oats. The last miller worked there until the 1950s. In 1960 the mill, threatened by decay, became private property and was extensively restored. The trail climbs up to the Eifelblick Kierberg, 455 metres above sea level, which offers a fantastic view over Lake Rursee and the Eifel National Park and on to the outskirts of Steckenborn. Near Kesternich you will then encounter various scattered emigrant farms. During the land consolidation in the 1970s, the farmers there exchanged their many small, often widely dispersed estates for a coherent area outside the village. Shortly before Rurberg, a short detour to the "Eifelblick - Youth Hostel" 470 metres above sea level is worthwhile. The reward for this effort is a fantastic view far across Lake Rursee to the wooded slopes of the Eifel National Park. The tour ends in Rurberg, where you can end the day in one of the cosy cafes or restaurants.

Von Erkensruhr durch das Püngel- und Wüstebachtal

This tour takes you through the Püngel and Wüstebach valleys in the Eifel National Park. You hike from Erkensruhr through beech and mixed deciduous forests rich in deadwood, accompanied most of the time by the sound of one of the low mountain streams. The area is rich in flora and fauna. In spring, the daffodil blossom can be experienced, in summer the meadows become colorful thanks to the blooms of numerous wildflower species. At the beginning of 2017, a nature conservation project will come to an end here, which aims to pave the way for nature in the development national park to become wilderness. Some of the measures are visible and explained on the hike. The route consists of paved paths and small trails. The inclines and declines are not extreme, but a little surefootedness is required in a few places. All paths are marked on the hiking map. First you follow the Rur-Olef route upstream above Erkensruhr, then you follow the T3 themed tour, which you only leave for a short section that leads along the Püngelbach stream as a narrow path.
