The path first leads from the village center past the Catholic parish church into the quiet residential area with
pretty half-timbered houses, quarrystone-framed house fountains and imposing house hedges. At the edge of the village, it dips into the typical hedgerow landscape.

After crossing the source of a stream, the hiking trail turns left onto a romantic path. Its character is characterized by hillside pastures bordered by hedges, a rapidly deepening valley, secluded forest edges and varied forest passages. It is worth taking a short break at the easternmost point of our hike. From the "Eifel view" right next to the refuge, you have a wonderful view of the Rur valley, the villages of Widdau and Rohren and the extensive forest area of the Eifel National Park on the horizon. A moderately difficult ascent takes you back to the edge of the forest. A wayside cross stands between two mighty deciduous trees below district road 21. It commemorates three women and one man who were killed here by exploding shells during the fierce fighting of the Second World War.

After crossing a small stream, a romantic path leads down to the hillside path with its spruce and mixed deciduous forest above the Rur, which will accompany you with its rushing waters for the next 1.4 kilometers. In between, a clearing overgrown with broom offers the opportunity to take a look down into the valley and at the Höfen pastureland opposite. It is a special experience when the gorse transforms the whole area into a sea of golden yellow flowers in spring.

After leaving the forest, the path winds between mighty beech trees and dense hedges through the ancient cultivated land of Menzerath. Shortly before the road, a quarry stone wall rises up on the right. Hidden behind it is an old cemetery with magnificent gravestones that you should not miss. Between 1678 and 1862, numerous members of the Monschau and Imgenbroich clothmaking families were buried there alongside clergymen from the Protestant parish. Crossing the Eschbachtal valley and past the Hargard youth hostel, you reach the outskirts of Imgenbroich after crossing the main road via a hedge path. Before returning to the starting point, however, you should definitely take a look at a few special sights west of the village on a short 1.4-kilometre loop. Where today, surrounded by trees, there is a blown-up bunker covered with earth, there used to be the Walchenau cemetery, which served as the first burial place for Lutherans and Reformed in the Monschau region between 1600 and 1794.

Shortly afterwards, you will come across the hump line of the 630-kilometre-long "Westwall", which was built in 1938 as an anti-tank barrier and included the bunker. The hiking trail leads about 500 meters over the edge of the foundation. Over the course of time, small biotopes have developed within the concrete-enclosed areas. There are only a few places in the Imgenbroich area that offer such a magnificent view to the west. You can marvel at almost the entire Vennrand of the Monschau region, from the Pannensterzkopf (660 m) near Kalterherberg on the left to the Steling (659 m) above Mützenich and the western foothills of the Hoscheit (599 m) near Lammersdorf.
