Kohl(e)tour Broichbachtal - Alsdorf
Herzogenrath
Red cabbage meets kale'
Woods and hedges, pastures and orchards accompany our hike, then imposing slag heaps form the backdrop for vast fields of red cabbage. In Noppenberg, we smile at the curious founding of a cycling club and marvel at the high-wheel monument, in which mining machine parts have been used. Upstream, a self-built mining landscape made of gabions and a wagon adorns a front garden that has found a new purpose as a flower box. Oldies from cultural history also send their regards: Ottenfeld Castle, which juts out from its avenue, dates back to the 15th century. The mills, of which there were once four along our route alone, tell us that it is not just mining that has a history here. In addition to other mill ponds on the Broichbach, which still exist today, the reservoir in Herzogenrath can also be traced back to a mill that already existed in the Middle Ages. The building of the Alsdorf oil mill still stands today.
