Katzensteinerweg - Von Einruhr zur Dreiborner Hochfläche
The hike starts at the healing stone fountain in Einruhr. The healing effects of the water were probably already known to the Romans, as coin finds suggest. The people of Einruhr were initially denied access to the spring after the Second World War, as it has its source in the former Vogelsang military training area. This only changed in 2003 with the construction of the healing stone fountain in the inner courtyard of the Heilsteinhaus. You should try the refreshing water!
After just under a kilometer, you leave the village and enter a wooded area. After a sharp turn, the path leads you along the edge of the forest to the Dreiborn plateau. Since the plateau has been part of the Eifel National Park and largely left to its own devices, many endangered animal and plant species, such as the fire salamander, have settled here. This is due to several factors: the early agricultural use of the plateau resulted in the clearing of the forest. During later military use, the heavy tanks compacted the soil in many places to such an extent that ponds formed, which now serve as spawning grounds for amphibians.
The route leads back towards Einruhr. Before you reach the village again, you will pass a water treading basin, a relic from the old water supply. Where once the best spring water flowed through the pipes and supplied the people of Einruhr with the necessary water, today tourists strengthen their immune system: Here you can stimulate your circulation in good Kneipp fashion.
