Im Schatten der Vennbahn - Zwischen Roetgen und Eupen und Wesertalsperre

The approximately 37-kilometre tour starts in Roetgen at the former railroad station. We leave Roetgen in a south-westerly direction and reach the idyllic Weser river valley after just a few kilometers. Like many streams and rivers in the region, the source of the Weser is in the High Fens, close to the German-Belgian border near Konzen. We follow the lively course of the river for a few kilometers and finally ride along the north bank of the Weserbach dam to the dam wall with visitor center.

This impressive structure rises up at the confluence of the Weser and Getzbach rivers just a few kilometers from Eupen's city center and supplies Eupen, the Herve region and the Liège area with drinking water from its 16-kilometer-long reservoir. The visitor center located at the dam is an ideal excursion destination for families with children, but also for adventurers or anyone who simply wants to relax. The terrace with "lake view" invites you to enjoy the sunny summer days. There is also a large playground for younger visitors.

The route takes us over the huge dam wall and we continue along the banks of the Weser to Eupen. The capital of the German-speaking community of Belgium lies on the border between the green meadows of the Herve region and the Ardennes forests of East Belgium and is an important regional trade and economic center. Merchants' houses from the 18th century are reminiscent of the local cloth manufactory and lend the town a historical flair. The first cloth factories opened in Eupen at the end of the 17th century. The economic boom has left a lasting impression on the townscape. In the upper town, baroque and neoclassical town palaces, most of which date back to the 18th century, are lined up around the market square and St. Nicholas Church.

We continue through extensive meadows to our left and dense forests to our right and reach the pottery village of Raeren, whose pottery was in demand throughout Europe in the 13th century. The village itself is characterized by its quarry stone architecture and still has its original village appearance. The historic moated castle from the 14th century forms the center of Raeren. Inside the castle, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the Raeren potters and admire their magnificent products

Via the Vennbahn, where freight trains loaded with pig iron once traveled from Luxembourg to Aachen, we finally cycle in sweeping curves through the uninhabited woodlands of the Raeren Forest back to the starting point in Roetgen, where the tour ends.

  • Osthertogennwald forest
  • Weser valley
  • Weser dam with visitor center (Eupen dam)
