Flurheckenweg

Simmerath

The approx. 8-kilometre hike starts on Bachstraße in Eicherscheid. The picturesque village is surrounded by centuries-old hedgerows and also has a lot of charm in its interior. Listed half-timbered houses, which hide behind meter-high hedges to protect them from the strong Eifel wind, small chapels and wayside crosses characterize the village center. The parish church at the starting point was built in 1933. Numerous old grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries can be found on the back of the cemetery wall. While they have long since disappeared from other places, they can still be admired here in their special splendor.

You leave the idyllic Eifel village in a northerly direction and dive straight into the impressive hedgerow landscape around the village. The beech hedges, some of which are centuries old, stretch for over 100 kilometers along the corridors. The trees, some of which are more than 300 years old, characterize the landscape and were once used as boundary markers. They are a special landmark of the region and absolutely worth seeing! As "green and living pasture fences", they still keep the cattle away from the fields and offer them protection from the wind. Simply follow the signposted circular trail, experience the beauty of the landscape and learn about the special features of the Eicherscheider hedges at the seven information stations.

You can also enjoy the view over the Rur valley from the "Worbelescheed" Eifel viewpoint. From here you can also see the Schleiden hilltop villages of Herhahn and Dreiborn, as well as the huge wind turbines of the Schöneseiffen and Dreiborn wind farms.

Grünroute: Etappe 1 Düren - Aachen

Just a few decades ago, mining shaped the border triangle between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The Green Route combines the industrial monuments with the region's new closeness to nature. Anyone cycling in the "green metropolis" will experience this landscape in a completely new way. The area, which stretches from Düren to Beringen in Belgium, was once one of the largest coal mining areas in Europe. The relics of mining are still visible in many places. Miners' settlements, old castles and museums pass by, and time and again you come across former collieries that are now relaxing parkland.

As soon as snow falls in the Eifel, the landscape is transformed into a winter paradise and you can go tobogganing, cross-country skiing or downhill skiing! The small ski areas in the Eifel have many advantages for winter sports fans: short journey times, a family atmosphere, cozy huts and great opportunities for tobogganing and cross-country skiing. There are numerous trails around the Monschau region where cross-country skiers can let off steam, for example in Lammersdorf, Eicherscheid, Kalterherberg, Höfen and Rohren. The "Antoniusbrücke" trail shown here is approx. 5 kilometers long and is located in the south of Monschau and leads through the idyllic Höfen forest.
