Grünroute: Etappe 4 Voerendaal - Maasmechelen / Eisden
Voerendaal
You cycle past numerous castles and palaces on this almost 55 km long stage. Right at the start, the more than 750-year-old moated castle Kasteel Hoensbroek is worth a detour. You cycle past the town of Geleen and the typical Dutch windmills down to the Meuse, where the green route between the Meuse and the parallel Julianakanal makes a detour to the north. This detour is well worth it, however, as you pass the pretty little villages of Elsloo (with its castle and gardens) and Stein, which are perfect for a break. From here, a small bicycle ferry takes you across the Meuse to the Belgian part of Limburg, where the "Maascentrum De Wissen" welcomes you with a small museum and lots of useful information and services for cyclists. You now cycle along the Belgian Albert Canal on the "Flanders Route" cycle path, past the designer outlet Maasmechelen Village, before the stage ends at the foot of the "Sint Barbara Mines Cathedral".
