Große-Rurtal-Runde - Zwischen Widdau und Hammer
Simmerath
The tour starts in Hammer and first leads through the village to the old hammer mill. The former factory building impressively documents the local production and working conditions in the 18th century. The former watercourse that carried the water required to drive the hammer mill can be seen to the side of the historic building. You can find out more about the history at the hammer mill rest and adventure station.
A little way along the Rur, the path finally moves away from the river and runs through a natural landscape characterized by forests towards Widdau. Shortly before reaching the village, you will pass an old quarry where quarry stones were once mined for the houses and churches in the area. A nearby cross is a reminder of the long tradition of Eifel wayside crosses, which were erected either in remembrance, devotion or in thanksgiving.
You then reach Widdau, one of the most rustic places in the Monschau region. Situated on the southern slope of the Rur, it has retained its homely character to this day. Fans of old half-timbered houses will get their money's worth here.
Immediately after leaving the village, you cross the Rur again and follow the river through the idyllic valley back to Hammer. The river makes its way through a picturesque landscape through a deep notch valley to the Rurseenplatte.
The ascent to the Uhusley, which owes its name to the eagle owl nesting in the crevices, is lined with meter-high Douglas firs along the way. If you rub the green needles of the tree, which is originally native to North America, they exude an aromatic, lemon-like scent. The reward for the arduous ascent is a beautiful view of the densely wooded valley of the Rur before returning to Hammer, where the fantastic tour ends.
