Grenztour Herzogenrath - Würselen
Herzogenrath
Current, past, blurred borders.
Among the contemporary witnesses is Rode Castle, a medieval customs station in the former Land of Rode, to which Kerkrade also belonged. Before the Wurm became a national border in 1815, it had been united under various lords for over 800 years. Some of the early rulers, Limburg dukes, found their final resting place in the neighboring Rolduc Abbey, which dates back to an early Rodegrave. In the forest to the south of Herzogenrath, we enter the Duchy of Jülich, which here, secured by Wilhelmstein Castle, stretched between the Aachen Empire in the south and the Land of Rode as far as the Wurm. But it is not just the old borders that are blurred: the Eurode Business Center with buildings in two countries and the Aachener Straße/Nieuw Straat with the visavis of German and Dutch neighbors are the inspiration for the common roots and visions of the region.
