Feierabendrunde Herzogenrath, Grube Adolf

Whether it's a 100-metre ascent, a flat circuit or a combination of both, this tour simply means: always along the slag heap! The enchanted paths are lined with trees and shrubs that have been taking over the slag heap for 50 years now and have turned it into a landscape park. A special flora and fauna has developed on the dark, heat-retaining soil with its coal history, which is otherwise more likely to be found in the Mediterranean.

The climb to the summit is worthwhile. The "Haldenaufstieg/Höhenweg" signposts lead to two viewing plateaus at 230 meters and 245 meters and open up wonderful distant views towards the Maas, Rhine, Hohes Venn, Eifel and the Selfkant.

The settlement of Streiffeld at the foot of the slagheap also has mining roots. When the mine's namesake, Adolf Freiherr von Steffens, chairman of the supervisory board of the Eschweiler Bergwerksverein (EBV), acquired the site in 1899, there was only farmland and two estates here. With coal mining came the workers. In 1910, the EBV launched the "Streiffeld Garden City" project, and the first miners moved in in 1911. The "Streiffelder Hof", one of the two original farmsteads, became a casino for miners from 1914 to 1966.

Coal mining began in 1913 with a shaft on site. A number of technical innovations made the Adolf mine a pioneer in mining technology. In its heyday, it produced up to 1 million tons of coal a year and provided employment for 2,700 people. The mine was closed in 1972.
