Entlang von Kall- und Dreilägerbachtalsperre ins Venn
Heimbach
On our 46-kilometre tour, we explore the dam and fen landscape around Roetgen. Just a few kilometers past the town limits of Lammersdorf, we come across the Kall dam surrounded by dense forest, which is directly connected to the Dreilägebachtalsperre dam in Roetgen via the 6.2 km long Kall tunnel. Together, the two dams supply thousands of households in the city of Aachen, the northern city region of Aachen and the district of Heinsberg with drinking water every day.
We follow the western bank of the dam, pass the so-called Kaiserfelsen and finally cross the dam wall, which offers a beautiful view of the lake. The path now turns north and we immerse ourselves in the dense forest landscape of the Simmerath Forest. On our way to the Dreilägerbach dam, things get sporty now without electronic support, as we go up and down through the low mountain range landscape of the Eifel.
Following the northern bank of the Dreilägerbachtalsperre, we finally reach Roetgen, cross the village and then enter the northern foothills of the High Fens on the Belgian side via the Weser Valley and the Osthertogenwald forest.
The moor and heathland landscape of the High Fens is unspoiled, untouched and wild. You can otherwise only find it like this in far more northerly latitudes. Around 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, the upland moors typical of this landscape formed on the barren, waterlogged soil. These still characterize parts of the vast plateau of the Venn today and allow you to experience their rare primeval flair.
Back in Germany, we come across the Vennbahn. Where once trains loaded with iron ore and coal made their way through the Eifel with little incline, cyclists can now explore three different countries on one of the longest railroad cycle paths in Europe. The Vennbahn takes us back to Lammersdorf via the Paustenbacher Venn with few gradients and in comfort. At junction 16, we finally leave the V'ennbah in the direction of junction 17 until we reach the starting point of the tour again after a few hundred meters.
