Agrippastraße Etappe 2: Erftstadt bis Zülpich

Erftstadt

The start of the second stage on the Agrippa Road is the Mansio Liblar in the Frauenthal district, which is located next to the site of a Roman settlement. Nowadays, only a slight elevation can be heard when the field is plowed, but the ground plan of one of the houses built in the 2nd/3rd century AD is to be made recognizable in the terrain in a second expansion phase of the Roman Road Experience. There is still no consensus on the function of the complex. On the one hand, it could have been a manor house (villa rustica), on the other hand, it could have been a rest stop (mansio) due to its proximity to the road.

Not far from the starting point of the mansio Liblar, you now cross the Erft, which meandered strongly in those days. It is no longer possible to say how the river was crossed in Roman times, whether in the form of a ford or a wooden or stone bridge. However, the crossing was probably only a few meters upstream of the old Erft bridge. We follow the Erft for a short distance before turning right and finally arriving at the Römerhof stud farm, which is well-known among horse lovers. The facility can look back on 130 years of history and has largely retained its original, typical character.

Nowhere else in the Rhineland does a Roman road run as straight as if it had been drawn with a ruler, such as the Agrippa Road through the loess banks between Erftstadt-Liblar and Zülpich. And nowhere else is it so well maintained and paved. Straight through the fields, past the Laacher Hof farm, we reach Mühlenstraße, where the Ahremer Mühle mill, number 19, is located. It is an oil and grain mill built in 1293, which was once supplied and powered by water from the nearby Rotbach stream via the Lechernich mill race.

The route continues straight on along Agrippastrasse in the direction of Zülpich. On the right are the villages of Erp and Weiler in the plain, on the left Friesheim and Borr. Once you reach the wayside cross at the junction with the Erp-Friesheim road, the Agrippastrasse climbs significantly for the first time. Here, at the so-called "Hexenberg", you have to overcome the edge of the Rhenish middle route. Archaeologists have observed a high concentration of finds here. Walls, ditches, pits and burials indicate Roman settlements. Even where the Agrippastrasse runs through the open fields today, it repeatedly encountered buildings alongside the road in Roman times.

At Marienholz, a wooded area in the Zülpich town area, Agrippastrasse turns at an acute angle towards the center of Zülpich. Here, the ancient road lies beneath the modern pavement. It therefore runs parallel to the busy road through fields in the direction of Haus Boulich, a moated castle mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century. The castle was frequently destroyed and rebuilt due to frequent fires, the effects of war and other misfortunes. It is now dominated by a modern farm.

Zülpich, the ancient Tolbiacum, can be reached via the Römerallee. Visit the impressive ruins of the Roman baths in the Museum of Bathing Culture.

Continue along Agrippastrasse from Zülpich to the district of Hoven. On the last 400 m from Hoven to Merzenich, you leave the ancient route, which remains recognizable thanks to the dead-straight tree-lined country lane. Finally, you reach the end of the second stage, the Mansio Zülpich.
