The Wehrhafte Schmied is an Aachen city hero who killed Count Wilhelm IV of Jülich, three of his sons and other followers in the cathedral quarter in 1278 during a raid on the city. In front of the fountain, an archaeological window offers an insight into a "mill race" from Aachen's medieval history.
