Von Kalterherberg zum Rursee und zurück
Simmerath-Einruhr
The almost 50-kilometer tour is strenuous, so much in advance, but also rewards us again and again with the idyllic natural landscape of the Eifel. The tour first takes us through the beautiful Rur valley from Kalterherberg to Monschau. The former cloth-making town of Monschau, idyllically situated along the route, invites you to linger. Anyone who has strolled through the old town of Monschau will understand why Monschau is also known as the "Pearl of the Eifel" or the "Rhenish Rothenburg". Virtually nothing has changed in the townscape here for almost 300 years: An idyll of half-timbered houses and quarrystone buildings, the uniqueness of which is unparalleled today.
The tour continues along the course of the Rur to Einruhr and from here leads through the Eifel National Park, the only national park in North Rhine-Westphalia. Beech forests line the route here. In keeping with the motto of all German national parks "Let nature be nature", the Eifel National Park protects the valuable natural treasures of the Eifel over an area of 110 square kilometers. Typical of the landscape on the tour are the numerous impressive meter-high hedgerows within the settlements, which were created to protect the individual farms from the wind, as well as a distinctive system of hedgerows that runs through fields and meadows. The Eifel dome announces the approaching end of our tour.
