Built between 1928 and 1930, it was one of the first churches in Germany to be built on a cubic base, making it a truly unique building. The people of Aachen affectionately call it "Sankt Makei" (Öcher Platt for "curd cheese"), as in the eyes of the locals it is reminiscent of an overturned packet of curd cheese.
