Rennradtour: Quer durch die Eifel mit Robert Wagner

Vaals

Train like a pro! Experience the region in all its facets on this almost 200 km long tour across the Eifel - from the hilly Eupener Land, through the rugged nature of the Eifel National Park to the flat Bördeland landscape around Zülpich, characterized by wide views.

Robert Wagner, 2011 German champion and current pro in Team Lotto-Jumbo NL, takes you on one of his favorite training rides in his adopted home around the border triangle.

The tour starts at the parking lot of the Dreiländereck on the Vaalserberg, from where the route first descends into Belgium towards Kelmis. The route then climbs steadily via Eynatten and Raeren, where it crosses the Vennbahn cycle path, back to Germany. In Roetgen, you now join the Vennbahn cycle path for approx. 10 km, which you leave in Lamersdorf and the tour heads towards the Rursee lake via Simmerath and Kesternich. A beautiful serpentine descent leads down to the lake in Woffelsbach. If you like, you can take your first break by the lake here after just under 2 hours of riding before tackling the almost 3 km climb up to Steckenborn. Along the L246 and L218, the tour now leads back into the Rur valley to Heimbach, where you join the Rur-Ufer cycle path for a few kilometers.

Once in Nideggen, we leave the Eifel and already have beautiful views of the Zülpicher Börde. The route is now flat and very fast in a westerly wind along the L11 towards Zülpich and then north along the B477 towards Nörvenich and Düren. Düren city centre, which is within reach at kilometer 120, now offers another opportunity for a break before heading back into the green Eifel.

Via Schevenhütte, Vicht, Zweifall and Rot, the route now undulates to the Dreilägerbach dam before reaching Roetgen again at kilometer 150 and completing the circuit of the northern Eifel. The return journey now begins through beautiful Venn landscapes towards Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. From Eupen, the route now undulates back via Hergenrath towards Kelmis and Plombieres, before the last two difficulties of the day await: In Gemmenich, the route heads back over the "Pass of Wolfshaag" towards Vaals, where the ascent to the border triangle, the starting point of the tour, begins.
