Marschiertor

Aachen

The former border gate to Burtscheid was part of the 13th century town wall and was primarily used as the main fortification. Together with ten other city gates and a ring of walls, the construction of the marching gate enabled the city to be well defended. Today, the building is home to the Oecher Penn city guard, who also donated the sculpture by Klaus Gehlen, which commemorates the gatekeepers of the time, the Pennsoldaten. In the evening, it is worth taking a walk around the building, which is bathed in a warm glow in the dark.
