The Marian chapel, popularly known as the "Kapellchen", was built in 1643 on the initiative of the citizens of Burtscheid, the abbess of Burtscheid and the monk Peter Kerchof. As it was built in honor of the "Madonna of Scherpenheuvel", the chapel in Burtscheid is also known as "Klein-Scherpenheuvel".
