Karlsbrunnen
Aachen
The city's oldest fountain, the Karlsbrunnen or market fountain, has seen a lot. In 1792, the statue of Charlemagne was taken away by the French as spoils of war, but was recovered in 1804. Between 1969 and 2014, the original statue stood in the Coronation Hall of Aachen Town Hall. With the opening of the Centre Charlemagne - Neues Stadtmuseum Aachen, the real Karl has found a new home here. Since then, a replica of Charlemagne has stood in the six-ton bronze bowl. Due to its appearance, the bronze fountain bowl is also affectionately referred to by the people of Aachen as the Eäzekomp (pea bowl).
