Heiliger Stephanus
Aachen
The figure is therefore not Charlemagne, as one might assume. The bronze sculpture, created in 1993 by the Hungarian sculptor Imre Varga, was a gift from Hungarian pilgrims and commemorates the Aachen Shrine Pilgrimage, which takes place in Aachen every seven years. In the Middle Ages and early modern times in particular, many pilgrims came to Aachen from Hungary to venerate the shrines. The Hungarian Chapel, in front of which the sculpture stands today, was built especially for them.
