Das wilde Land

This impressive hike, which starts at the Auberge de la Fagne at the entrance to Xhoffraix, takes you into a region that is very close to nature. Right at the start, the hiking trail meets the "Fagne du Freineu" via wooden paths.
After an open landscape, the trail crosses a dark forest. The homogeneity of this forest is interrupted when an island of deciduous trees, "The Six Beeches", once a resting place for the region's shepherds, appears in the middle of this army of spruce trees.

A souvenir of the former landscape, when this region was still covered by vast pastures and heaths. In the XVIIth century, iron carts from the Eifel passed through this place on their way to the ironworks in Liège. Via a loop, the hiking trail meets the monument to Léon Fredericq. The surroundings here are particularly wild. The path sometimes leads between bushes, sometimes along wooden paths to keep your feet dry. A little further on, the Trôs Maret has carved out a narrow valley that forms a real little canyon.

Along the stream, you can admire the small waterfalls flowing over quartzite and sandstone. After a final climb, you reach Xhoffraix, where this hike to fall in love with comes to an end.

Highlights:

  • Vennlandschaft
  • Rest area 6 beeches
  • Monument to Léon Fredericq
